Situated just over 2 miles from Craven Arms, in the vale of the river Clun, Aston on Clun's history goes as far back as the Bronze Age and is recorded in the Domesday Book as Esten. Aston's famous buildings range from a Watermill, Round Houses, Court House to a Baptist Chapel.
Perhaps the biggest day in Aston on Clun is Arbor Day. Celebrated on the last Sunday in May, and originally known as Oak Apple Day, it began in 1660 when King Charles II returned to the throne.
By the mid 1800's this celebration was abolished apart from here and is believed to be the only place in the country to celebrate it. More information on this event can be found at www.arbordayuk.co.uk.
Further events are usually held in The Village Hall or on The Village Green. Flicks in the Sticks, dog training, rounders, cricket, line dancing are just a few examples of what goes on in our busy little hamlet. Visit www.2shrop.net/hopesay and find out what goes on in our parish. You may wish to join in!
The Kangaroo Inn was built in 1740 but it wasn't until 100 years later that it became a public house. Details of The Kangaroo's past lives can be found on some of the walls in the pub including details of its sale from The Oaker Estate, back in 1949.
Since the naming of The Kangaroo back in 1840, the origin of its name is not quite clear, though it is believed to be associated with the S.S. Kangaroo, an Atlantic cable runner.
Lost in time and with the divisions of land, are the facts. It is hoped that with current research and a little help from friends (hint, hint) we may soon provide it's true origin.
These days...
The Kangaroo Inn is an active community country pub. As well as supporting local schools and charities our pet charity is Midlands Air Ambulance. We hold quiz nights, promise auctions, car boot sales amongst other fundraisers for this cause. Visit www.midlandsairambulance.com to find out more about this charity.
You can find The Kangaroo Inn in 'the bible' aka CAMRA's Good Beer Guide. www.camra.org.uk/gbg The pub was awarded with a certificate to recognise it's listing in this guide for 10 years in 2009. We celebrate ales on a regular basis but especially at our beer festival - August Bank Holiday. 20 different ales, local cider & perry all weekend long!
There's quite a lot going on at 'The Kangy'. Have a look at our Facebook page to find out about upcoming events.
